What we can do
Signs of Solidarity (15 min)
Our first option targets small business spaces as a pillar of society. We can work with local businesses in our community to ask them to put up clear signage saying ICE is not welcome, and sending a message of solidarity and community safety to all who cross their doors. We can take a stand to protect our neighbors and make it clear that immigrants, not ICE, are welcome in our community.
Signs of Solidarity is a campaign to visit small businesses in our local area and ask the owner to post signs that declare their support for their immigrant neighbors and opposition to ICE, as well as create a private area for employees that ICE cannot legally enter without a signed judicial warrant.
These signs demonstrate solidarity; not just with immigrant communities, but with everyone who is standing up against Trump’s power grabs. And when multiple businesses in our community display these signs, it has an even bigger impact. It lets everyone know that defiance is everywhere, and all of us have ways we can courageously oppose authoritarian actions from the government.
Discuss and brainstorm together:
- Who feels like they can take this action?
- What businesses can we start with? Make a list.
- When can we go? Make a plan and put it on the calendar.
- What might we say if a business is resistant?
